The paratext gains new importance when the proliferation of media demands better discoverability of books. If I owned or managed a publishing house, I would be reviewing any policy that involved selling to them. Order one (or more!) and display it in your store. How many books do you want to read, and how often do you want to meet? The difference would be this: yes, I am treated like dirt and yelled at in triage for not getting you back immediately. Independent booksellers were not naive to the likelihood of unfair and illegal terms of sale by some publishers to favored customers.

Booksellers have worked long and hard to codify a simple and straightforward set of gradings for used and antiquarian books, and for the most part they have tended to be fairly consistent with one another. This does not mean they do not know anything about specialized categories, it just means they are willing to sell books in any category where there is a profit to be had. I read an interesting article this weekend about the history of Evangelical Christians recommending books.
