This variety of spaces can be roughly divided into those studied by differential geometry and those studied by algebraic geometry. Introduction to Abelian Model Structures and Gorenstein Homological Dimensions provides a starting point to study the relationship between homological and homotopical algebra, a very active branch of mathematics. We have retained much of Gauss's notation to this day, such as using E, F, and G for denoting the coefficients of the first fundamental form when dealing with two-dimensional surfaces immersed in three dimensional space.

The Borel-Weil theorem for complex projective space, M. Frankel covers less subjects than Nakahara, but with more depth (though also more wordiness -- I quit Frankel about 2/3 through because it wasn't succinct enough and I got tired of it). Well, you get this heavy arsenal from Differential Geometry + PDE = Gauge Theory. The intuitive idea is very simple: Two spaces are of the same homotopy type if one can be continuously deformed into the other; that is, without losing any holes or introducing any cuts.

This book is a very good introduction to all the hairy squibbles that theoretical physicists are writing down these days. To do that, we construct an anti de Sitter height function and a Lightcone height function, and then show the relation between singularities of the lightlike surfaces (respectively, the focal surfaces) and that of the anti de Sitter height functions (respectively, the Lightcone height functions). (Based on work with Cappell and Yan, and conversations with Klein.) The framework for classifying high dimensional manifolds, surgery theory, does not work for manifolds with group actions in the absence of of a condition called the gap hypothesis.
