Buddhist causality (see pratītyasamutpāda), or dependent origination, also describes how events take place in the world because of prior causes. Jean Bodin (1530–1596) argued that state and society needed the stability that only a sovereign and absolute power can provide, and that this must be the monarchy, in his Six livres de la république (1576; Six Books on the commonwealth; in Latin, 1586). Joseph Hoffmann is absolutely correct, then, in asserting that organized Humanism “has been turned into a parody of serious humanist principles and ideals.” He is also right in observing that Humanist philosophy deplores injustice, oppression, and poverty “because they are attacks on our humanity—on the principle of the dignity of mankind.” What he misses, along with nearly everyone else, is the deep connection between the two: a major reason why the Humanist movement makes a mockery of Humanist convictions is that its foundational and customary commitment to the goal of economic justice has been, for the most part, abandoned.
