I started by having them use two ten frames. They were able to make the numbers using place value disks and see how many until they got to the next ten. They are developing the procedural fluency and understanding that are so essential to mathematics; and they are developing the habits of mind that will continue to serve them well in more advanced, college level mathematics courses. I am all for math being “fun” but overuse of the manipulative could cause students to become too accustomed to the activities of the lesson and forget the actual lesson.
