You are not the first person to carefully reflect upon this question about light travel. Areas of interest include coherent control of light ( Seideman ), non-linear optics, excitonics, and plasmonics, ( Kumar, Ketterson, Shahriar ), non-classical states of light ( Kumar ), and biophotonics ( Ketterson, Jacobsen ).
